A Few Facts about Voice Over IP (VoIP) Phones

Voice Over IP (commonly referred to as VoIP) is a term for a set of facilities used to manage the delivery of voice information over the internet. VoIP phones allow telephone calls to be made over an IP network like the Internet.
Due to technology, VoIP can turn a standard internet connection into a way to make free phone calls. It involves sending voice information in digital format in discrete packets and real-time protocol is used to ensure the packets get delivered.

Because VoIP phones do not make use of the public switched telephone networks (PSTNs), companies can avoid costs charged by ordinary telephone networks. A VoIP phone makes it possible for a company to install its own IP network which can be used along with PSTNs.

A VoIP phone looks a lot like a standard phone with a speaker, microphone, key pad and display, and a cordless version is also available. The cordless version looks very similar to a standard cordless phone.

A dual mode VoIP phone enable users to continue a conversation without any disturbances when they are moving between an outside cellular service and internal Wi-Fi network. This makes maintenance so much easier as it is cheaper and there are less devices to keep maintained.

Currently there are still some disadvantages to using a VoIP phone instead of a standard phone. Issues include problems with bandwidth and electricity supply. These two topics are both government related issues and at this stage the private sector has no say in the matter. In countries where there are no problems with electricity or bandwidth supply, VoIP phones are becoming a popular choice among businesses.

An Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) can sort out the electricity problems and once other problems relating to this matter are fixed in South Africa, it will become the obvious choice for many companies who are trying to save money while still increasing their productivity.

Voice Over IP

The abbreviation for Voice Over IP is pronounced “voyp”, similar to the pronunciation of the word voice. This technological advancement is available on smartphones and tablets or PDAs. Even if the tablet is not a phone, you will still be able to make a phone call or send a text message via 3G or Wi-Fi.

Great news to anyone who wishes to save money and bypass the PSTN’s charges completely is that VoIP can transmit more than one telephone call over a single broadband connection.

VoIP phones connect directly to a router and onboard it has all the software and hardware necessary to handle an IP call with no interruptions. A conversation through a standard phone is all analogue, but with the VoIP phone converters are used to convert voice which is analogue, into digital data and vice versa. A VoIP phone and router is dependent on electricity for power, as discussed above.

Most VoIP phones have a PC (Personal Computer) jack on the phone which allows a computer and the phone to share one data connection. In other words the address book and other information stored on your computer like a digital answering machine will be available through your VoIP phone.

For businesses who wish to reduce their monthly telephone bills, VoIP makes a lot of sense. It allows voice and data communication to run over a single network, therefore reducing infrastructure costs significantly. Just by not having to insert an extension, or even more than one in some cases, into every office will already save a lot of money, never mind the increased telephone bills at the end of every month.

If you are looking for great ways how you can help your business to save money, VoIP phones could be the solution to your unnecessary money spending problem.
